Hello, I’m Dr. Jorie Himmel, owner and licensed psychologist at Psychology ATX.
I provide individual therapy and career counseling for adults. I believe in the importance of a good therapeutic relationship and use warmth and authenticity to create a collaborative therapeutic environment. It is in this context that clients are able to more deeply engage in self-exploration and growth.
I use a relational and psychodynamic approach to therapy, while integrating cognitive-behavioral (CBT), dialectical-behavioral (DBT), and mindfulness-based interventions. I work with my clients to examine the connection between internal and external experiences, as well as to explore your relationships. In this way I can help you to gain insight and to build adaptive coping skills in order to feel healthier and more fulfilled.
Education and Training
I received a bachelor's degree in Environmental Biology from Skidmore College and my master's and doctoral degrees in Clinical Psychology from Antioch University New England. I completed pre-doctoral training at the Bedford Veterans Affairs hospital in Massachusetts, as well as two years of internship at the Brandeis University, Psychological Counseling Center. I also completed a postdoctoral fellowship in integrated behavioral health at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates in Medford, MA. Prior to moving to Austin, I worked for two years as a Licensed Staff Psychologist at Commonwealth Psychology Associates in Boston.

In addition to my private practice, I also work with Driftwood Recovery’s SoCo Community Integration Program. There, we offer an intensive outpatient program (IOP) using an attachment-based recovery model for patients in the early stages of recovery. Our focus is on groups and individual therapy that are tailored to each patient’s specific needs. If you would like more information about this program, please follow the link above, or contact me.
Outside the Office
When I’m not working with my patients, I am likely to be spending time outside or snuggling with my dogs, Hunter & Hazel. I enjoy reading, exploring Austin neighborhoods and surrounding area swimming spots, trying out new cooking projects, and catching local live music. Prior to living in Austin, I lived in San Francisco, California, Boston, Massachusetts, and other parts of the Northeast. Since moving to Austin I've learned about the importance of tacos and Juiceland.
Please note, Dr. Himmel is currently taking new in-person patients in the Austin, TX area, and telehealth patients located in Massachusetts.
